John Malone: The Evolution of Technology Is Unstoppable!
Tuesday, September 9, 2025 · Johnny Hopkins

In a recent Bloomberg interview, John Malone reflected on the evolution of technology, stating, “I just think evolution of technology is unstoppable and accelerating.”
This perspective underpins a career built on identifying and capitalizing on seismic shifts in media and distribution. His approach to risk, however, is what truly defines his investing philosophy.
Recalling a period of immense pressure, he noted, “Having taken the job and made the bet, then your total focus is on survival.” This experience forged a permanent caution, leading to a core tenet: “risk avoidance coming out of the TCI survival, I think, was the number one lesson that I learned. Diversify, never cross guaranty, never consolidate liabilities.”
This meticulous structuring is designed to isolate failure. Malone elaborated on this strategy, explaining, “If you’re going to do what you regard as an uncertain acquisition, buy it into a stand alone capital structure… Structure it so it doesn’t poison the whole barrel of apples.”
This method ensures that the parent company “was always in a position to rescue the subsidiary, but never in jeopardy of a single torpedo.” He also emphasizes the importance of partners in assessing risk, noting, “The government is always your partner from a tax perspective… Lenders, if they have risk, they’re going to help you make sure that you’re not taking too much risk.”
Applying this lens to the current media landscape, Malone analyzed the challenges facing traditional cable, arguing the industry “got caught ourselves with a product that was just too highly priced.”
This created the opening for disruptors, as “Netflix succeeded, really, because the big bundle was way too expensive.” Looking forward, he sees scale as the critical differentiator, a lesson from his own playbook.
He believes that in streaming, “the real secret of Netflix is global is international,” and that for companies like Warner Bros. Discovery, international growth is where the future value lies. For Malone, investing is a continuous exercise in anticipating technological evolution while rigorously insulating oneself from its inherent and inevitable risks.
