Where Is the Deep Value in Small and Micro Caps This Week?
Tuesday, September 22, 2026 · Johnny Hopkins

The Acquirer’s Multiple® Small and Micro Cap screen is designed to search a less heavily followed part of the market—where limited analyst coverage and lower institutional ownership can sometimes allow significant valuation gaps to develop.
This week’s screen contains 200 companies, with a median Acquirer’s Multiple of approximately 9.1x. More importantly for deep-value investors, 76 companies trade below 8x, while 37 trade below 5x.
That creates a considerably larger pool of statistically inexpensive businesses than investors typically encounter among widely followed large-cap stocks.
Where the Cheapest Opportunities Are Concentrated
The sub-8x group is spread across several areas of the market, including:
- Investment services, specialty finance, banks and insurance
- Transportation and infrastructure services
- Energy exploration and downstream energy
- Apparel and consumer-related businesses
- Software, internet and data services
- Healthcare and biopharmaceutical companies
- Food production and machinery manufacturing
This breadth is notable. The cheapest part of the screen is not dependent on one distressed industry or a single economic theme.
Cheap—But Are They Producing Cash?
A low valuation becomes more interesting when it is supported by genuine cash generation.
Among the 76 companies trading below an 8x Acquirer’s Multiple, the median free-cash-flow yield is approximately 14%. Sixty-nine of those companies currently report a positive free-cash-flow yield.
The median five-year return on assets for this group is approximately 11.9%, while 64 of the 76 companies also report positive shareholder yield.
These figures do not prove that every company is attractive. They do, however, suggest that a meaningful portion of the deep-value pool consists of cash-producing businesses rather than companies that merely appear inexpensive because their operations are deteriorating.
Why Small and Micro Caps Require Additional Research
Smaller companies can offer greater valuation discrepancies, but they also bring additional risks. These may include lower trading liquidity, greater earnings volatility, customer concentration, weaker balance sheets and less comprehensive public information.
For that reason, the Acquirer’s Multiple should be treated as a starting point rather than a final investment decision. Investors should examine debt, cash-flow consistency, capital allocation, competitive position and the possibility that recent earnings are temporarily elevated.
Bottom Line
This week’s Small and Micro Cap screen contains a substantial deep-value opportunity set. More than one-third of the 200 screened companies trade below an 8x Acquirer’s Multiple, with strong median free-cash-flow generation across that group.
