Where Are the Income Opportunities in Canadian Stocks This Week?

Wednesday, September 23, 2026 · Johnny Hopkins

The Acquirer’s Multiple® Canada All TSX screen offers investors exposure to a market traditionally associated with dividends, cash-generative businesses and shareholder returns.

This week’s screen contains 104 Canadian-listed companies. The median company trades at an Acquirer’s Multiple of approximately 8.1x and offers a free-cash-flow yield of approximately 10.9%.

The valuation picture becomes even more interesting toward the cheaper end of the screen. Sixty-six companies trade below a 10x Acquirer’s Multiple, while 50 trade below 8x and 16 trade below 5x.

Where the Opportunities Are Concentrated

The cheaper portion of the Canadian screen is diversified across several areas of the market, including:

  • Insurance and financial services
  • Energy producers and energy-service companies
  • Telecommunications
  • Food producers and retailers
  • Transportation and infrastructure
  • Industrial distributors and manufacturers
  • Consumer products and automotive suppliers
  • Software and technology services
  • Materials and construction-related businesses

This variety means Canadian value investors are not limited to the country’s largest banks, energy producers and mining companies.

Income Supported by Cash Flow

Dividend investors should look beyond headline yield and ask whether the underlying business generates enough cash to support its distributions.

All 104 companies in this week’s screen report a positive free-cash-flow yield. Among the 66 companies trading below a 10x Acquirer’s Multiple, the median free-cash-flow yield is approximately 14.8%.

The same sub-10x group reports a median shareholder yield of approximately 13.1%, reflecting the combined effect of dividends and share repurchases recorded by the screen. Fifty-four of these companies report dividend yields above 5%.

These figures help identify potentially attractive research candidates, but unusually high yields require particular scrutiny. Special dividends, recent share-price declines, cyclical earnings and one-off capital returns can make a company’s reported yield appear more sustainable than it really is.

What Income Investors Should Examine

Before investing, income-focused investors should consider:

  • Free-cash-flow consistency
  • Dividend coverage and payment history
  • Debt and refinancing requirements
  • The cyclicality of earnings
  • Whether buybacks reduced the share count
  • Whether recent distributions are likely to continue

Bottom Line

The Canadian screen currently offers a broad selection of inexpensive, cash-generative companies with potentially attractive shareholder returns.

The complete premium screen gives subscribers access to the company names, rankings and underlying valuation, free-cash-flow, dividend, buyback, shareholder-yield and quality measures needed for further research.
