This Week’s Deep-Value Landscape: Acquirer’s Multiple Large-Cap Screen

Tuesday, May 26, 2026 · Johnny Hopkins

This week’s Acquirer’s Multiple® Large-Cap screen continues to highlight a market increasingly divided between expensive narrative-driven growth and deeply discounted cash-generative businesses still producing strong current operating results.

Investor attention remains heavily concentrated around artificial intelligence infrastructure, hyperscale technology spending, semiconductors, and platform businesses perceived as long-duration growth beneficiaries. Meanwhile, many mature businesses generating substantial free cash flow, returning capital aggressively, and maintaining resilient profitability continue trading at compressed valuations.

The disconnect between current operating economics and market sentiment remains unusually wide across several sectors represented on this week’s screen.

Financials continue to stand out as one of the deepest areas of value. Businesses such as Synchrony Financial (SYF), Bank of New York Mellon (BK), and Northern Trust (NTRS) continue producing durable earnings streams, strong shareholder yields, and disciplined capital return programs through dividends and buybacks.

Despite these characteristics, sentiment toward financials remains cautious amid concerns surrounding consumer credit quality, slowing economic activity, and softer capital markets conditions. Yet profitability across many of these businesses remains resilient, while valuations continue implying materially weaker long-term economics than current fundamentals suggest.

Energy exposure also remains highly prominent across this week’s screen, including Equinor (EQNR), Petrobras (PBR), BP (BP), Shell (SHEL), APA Corporation (APA), and Ecopetrol (EC).

Commodity-linked businesses continue trading at relatively modest valuations despite significantly improved capital discipline compared to prior energy cycles. Balance sheets remain materially healthier, free cash flow generation remains substantial, and shareholder return programs continue absorbing large amounts of excess cash flow through dividends and repurchases.

Even so, market skepticism toward energy persists as investors continue discounting the durability of current earnings and commodity pricing environments. Valuations across much of the sector still appear to assume that profitability will deteriorate meaningfully despite ongoing supply discipline and restrained capital spending.

Housing-related cyclicals also continue screening attractively. Homebuilders including PulteGroup (PHM) and Toll Brothers (TOL) remain highly profitable despite persistent concerns surrounding mortgage rates, affordability pressures, and slowing housing demand.

At the same time, several mature consumer and communications businesses continue generating meaningful free cash flow while receiving limited market enthusiasm. Companies such as Comcast (CMCSA), Charter Communications (CHTR), HP Inc. (HPQ), and Lululemon (LULU) continue demonstrating stable operating performance and strong cash conversion despite relatively modest valuation multiples.

Healthcare remains another notable area of value. Businesses including Cigna (CI) and Tenet Healthcare (THC) continue generating resilient operating cash flows even as investor sentiment toward portions of the healthcare sector remains increasingly selective.

Several industrial, telecommunications, and mature technology franchises also continue appearing throughout the screen. Businesses such as Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTSH), Telkom Indonesia (TLK), and CF Industries (CF) continue producing substantial earnings and shareholder yields while remaining overshadowed by higher-growth market narratives.

Bottom Line

This week’s screen continues to reflect an environment where strong free cash flow generation, disciplined capital allocation, and durable current profitability remain materially underappreciated relative to dominant growth narratives.

The opportunity set remains broad across financials, energy, healthcare, cyclicals, and mature cash-generative franchises where valuations continue implying significantly weaker long-term economics than current operating performance presently supports.
