This Week’s Large Cap Acquirer’s Multiple® Screen: Energy Dominance Continues, Finance Holds Firm

Tuesday, September 2, 2025 · Johnny Hopkins

This week’s Large Cap Acquirer’s Multiple® Screen once again highlights the market’s deep skepticism toward Energy and Financials, with both sectors dominating the top ranks of undervaluation.

From Petrobras (PBR) trading at an Acquirer’s Multiple (AM) of 4.1 and delivering a stunning 36.3% free cash flow yield, to Bank of New York Mellon (BK) at just 2.0 AM and steady buybacks plus dividends, the value case for energy and finance remains compelling.

Second-Tier Strength: Finance and Metals & Mining

The Finance sector remains a major presence. Synchrony Financial (SYF) stands out with an AM of 2.4 and an exceptional 34.8% FCF yield, suggesting investors remain cautious about consumer credit risk even as profitability soars.

Meanwhile, Metals & Mining names also populate the screen. Vale (VALE) trades at an AM of 6.0 with an 8.1% dividend yield, where commodity price volatility and China demand concerns keep multiples compressed despite solid fundamentals.

Why It Matters

When multiple sectors cluster at the top of value screens, it often reflects deep market pessimism about cash flow durability or cyclical risk. Energy’s dominance shows lingering doubts about long-term fossil fuel demand, while finance and mining underscore concerns about credit quality and global growth. Historically, such fears have created opportunities for contrarian, long-term investors.

Bottom Line

The current value landscape remains energy-led, with finance and metals & mining providing additional deep-value exposure. For disciplined investors, these sectors offer the potential “patience premium” that value investing often rewards when market skepticism runs high.
