This Week’s Large Cap Acquirer’s Multiple® Screen: Energy and Financials Continue To Dominate

Tuesday, September 16, 2025 · Johnny Hopkins

Energy and Financials continue to lead the value landscape, with Petrobras (PBR), Bank of New York Mellon (BK), and Equinor (EQNR) all screening attractively. Market skepticism around the durability of cash flows in these sectors remains entrenched.

From Petrobras (PBR), trading at an Acquirer’s Multiple (AM) of 4.1 with a hefty 35.0% free cash flow yield, to Bank of New York Mellon (BK) at just 2.1 AM supported by steady buybacks and dividends, investors continue to discount strong cash-generating franchises.

Second-Tier Strength: Finance and Energy

The Finance sector shows deep value. Synchrony Financial (SYF) trades at only 2.4 AM while boasting an exceptional 34.8% FCF yield and robust shareholder returns. Despite these numbers, the market continues to price in heightened consumer credit risk.

On the energy side, Equinor (EQNR) looks compelling at 2.6 AM, with an 11.8% FCF yield and a dividend yield north of 10%. Yet, much like Petrobras, its valuation implies a collapse in long-term fossil fuel demand that may prove overstated.

Why It Matters

Sector clustering in value screens highlights where the market’s fears are most intense. Energy remains treated as a sunset industry despite strong free cash flow, while finance trades at compressed multiples due to credit risk and rate sensitivity concerns. Historically, these dynamics have created rich opportunities for contrarians.

Bottom Line

This week’s screen reinforces a familiar pattern: energy leads the deep-value pack, with finance providing additional discounted exposure. For long-term investors willing to lean against consensus, these names may offer the kind of “patience premium” that value investing has traditionally rewarded.
