This Week’s Large Cap Acquirer’s Multiple® Screen: Finance Joins Energy at the Top

Wednesday, August 27, 2025 · Johnny Hopkins

Acquirer’s Multiple® Screen shows continued dominance from Integrated Oil & Gas companies but with Financials firmly joining the ranks of deep-value leaders.

From Petrobras (PBR) trading at an Acquirer’s Multiple (AM) of 4.0 with a staggering 36.8% free cash flow yield, to Bank of New York Mellon (BK) at just 1.7 AM and consistent shareholder returns, the value case in energy and finance remains compelling.

Second-Tier Overrepresentation: Finance and Metals & Mining

The Finance sector features prominently. Synchrony Financial (SYF) boasts an AM of 2.3 and a massive 35.9% FCF yield, reflecting the market’s ongoing caution around consumer credit risk despite exceptional profitability.

Meanwhile, Metals & Mining continues to populate the low-AM cohort. Vale (VALE) trades at 5.9 AM with an 8.1% dividend yield, as commodity price volatility and Chinese demand uncertainty keep valuations depressed despite solid balance sheets.

Why It Matters

Sector clustering at the top of value screens often signals market pessimism about cash flow durability or cyclical demand. Energy’s ongoing strength reflects doubts about long-term fossil fuel demand, while finance and mining highlight investor caution on credit and commodities. Historically, such skepticism has presented opportunities for contrarian, long-term investors.

Bottom Line

The current value landscape remains energy-led with strong financial representation. Integrated oil & gas names deliver robust cash returns, while finance and mining provide additional deep-value exposure. For disciplined investors, the market’s skepticism across these sectors may offer the patience premium value investing thrives on.
