Mario Gabelli Reveals His Top Value Picks in Today’s Market

Wednesday, July 30, 2025 · Johnny Hopkins

In a recent interview with CNBC, legendary value investor Mario Gabelli, chairman and CEO of Gamco Investors, shared his unfiltered views on today’s market dynamics. He dissects opportunities with his trademark blend of financial acumen and street smarts.

Gabelli’s approach remains intensely focused on individual company analysis. “I’m looking at specific stocks,” he said, pointing to opportunities like Flowserve. “The Flowserve stock at 5850 is down from 65. And it’s a bargain.” This bottom-up perspective has guided his investment philosophy through countless market cycles.

The veteran investor sees significant potential in the current M&A environment. “The notion of some of these transactions getting approved quickly…you’re going to have Ferguson at the head of the Federal Trade Commission,” he observed, highlighting regulatory changes that could accelerate deal activity. His take on the Union Pacific-Norfolk Southern potential merger? “It should not take two years.”

Media investments remain central to Gabelli’s strategy, with Paramount Global serving as a prime example of his long-term approach. “I’ve been in it for 50 years,” he noted, while acknowledging the stock’s volatility: “Paramount went from like 30 to 80 back to 23.” His analysis of the streaming wars cuts to the core: “They’ve got 2.5 billion shares of stock…$60 billion. Compare that to Netflix with 400 billion.”

Gabelli’s willingness to adapt his positions demonstrates the flexibility behind his success. When questioned about holding Paramount after revealing he had traded around the position. “I bought some today because I got until Thursday to make an election.”

His advice for media companies reflects his fundamental investment principles: “Give the consumer what they want, when they want it at the lowest possible cost.” This same pragmatic approach informs all his investment decisions.

Gabelli’s strategy: seek out undervalued opportunities, understand regulatory landscapes, and remain willing to adjust positions as conditions change. As he puts it with characteristic directness, “You got to look at financial engineering.” In an era of fleeting trends, Gabelli’s time-tested methods continue to deliver results.
